COVID-19 and Global Health
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused 9 million infections and 500,000 deaths worldwide. It has caused social disruption and economic devastation on a scale not seen since the Great Depression of the 1930s. The burden of COVID-19 disease and death has varied greatly from country, but the pandemic has spared no country.
Amidst all this suffering, the pandemic has generated an extraordinary outpouring of research. Studies are examining the biology of SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, the mechanisms of spread of this disease, and the epidemiology of the pandemic. Mathematical modellers are projecting the pandemic’s future course. Public health workers are struggling to contain the disease through the time-tested techniques of case identification, testing, contact tracing, and quarantine. Clinical researchers are seeking safe and effective therapeutic agents. Academic researchers and the pharmaceutical industry are racing to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.
In this Special Collection, we present a sample of this research. We have deliberately sought to include reports from low-income and middle-income countries as well as from high-income countries. The Collection includes a mix of biological, epidemiological, clinical, and intervention research. All papers in this Special Collection have been peer reviewed.
As always, we invite your comments and feedback.
